Best Restaurants To Eat For Kids and Parents

Jul 24, 2008 Cathal Coyle

Visitors can enjoy a fabulous array of exquisite cuisine in the cafes and restaurants of County Tyrone. This guide focuses on facilities available for young families.

Tyrone is one of the most popular county destinations for tourists in Ireland with its marvellous attractions such as Tullahogue Fort outside Cookstown and the Ulster American Folk Park situated between Omagh and Newtownstewart. With so many ubiquitous hostelries to select from, this guide should provide a better idea for those visitors who are taking the kids along for a light lunch or a wholesome dinner.

Otter Lodge, Cookstown

Situated on a beautiful riverbank location, this award-winning bistro is open for light lunches and evening meals seven days a week, the informal wine bar system creates a lively buzz. Renowned for consistently good food, the lunch specialities include Beef Stroganoff and Salmon on a bed of soft noodles drizzled with sweet chilli jus and are reasonably priced (£5.95). As there is no booking service for the lodge however, be prepared to wait on a table if visiting during the evening time as it can be fairly busy.

Viscounts, Dungannon

A converted church building has become one of Tyrone's finest restaurants, with many fine dishes to choose from. A recommendation is the Sunday Carvery whereby diners can select their choice of fish or poultry, while the dessert menu is superb, epitomised by the seasonal creme brulees such as winter berry. The restaurant is set on two floors, keeping the original church design, and attracts many celebrity diners from local sporting and media circles.

Mill Court, Coalisland

The Mill Court is inauspiciously located on Coalisland's Main Street, but is a true gem when it comes to family dining. It specialises in traditional pub-grub such as steak pie and mashed potato, but has long had an American flavour to its cuisine. Dishes such as Chicken Maryland are popular with diners, and with a relaxed atmosphere caters well for all types of family.

Silverbirch Hotel, Omagh

Located only a stone's throw from the famous GAA venue of Healy Park on the Gortin Road, the Silverbirch Hotel is ideal for families. Many critics consider it one of the finest eating hot-spots in the west of the county, and is an excellent stop before leaving or returning from nearby venues such as the Folk Park. A great variety of food is on offer during the day from wraps and sandwiches, panini rolls to more wholesome options such as Roast Turkey or Medallions of Pork; while the children's menu contains staples such as Chicken Goujons and Fish Fingers.
